The ants you are likely to have
Pharaoh ants are tiny, pale yellow-brown and found in kitchens and bathrooms, often in high-rise apartments, where they nest inside walls and spread along plumbing and wiring. Ghost ants are just as small, with a dark head and an almost see-through body, and favour kitchens, bathrooms and potted plants. Larger black ants usually nest outdoors, in garden beds, under paving and along compound walls, and come indoors for food and water.
The difference matters. Pharaoh ant colonies can split into several new colonies when they are disturbed by a repellent spray, which is why a quick spray from the supermarket can turn one kitchen problem into three. For those species bait is the main tool, and anything sprayed has to be kept away from the trails. Garden-nesting ants can be treated at the nest and along the outside of the building as well.
