Bird Control & Pigeon Proofing in the UAE

Guano is acidic. Left on painted steel, powder-coated aluminium, membranes and rendered surfaces it degrades the finish, and on a flat roof it blocks outlets and rainwater goods, which turns a bird problem into a water ingress problem the next time it rains hard.

Fouled walkways, stairs and loading bays are a slip hazard, especially when wet, and dried guano and nesting debris disturbed by cleaning or maintenance work create dust that people are right to be cautious about. On food, pharmaceutical and FMCG sites, birds inside a building or nesting immediately outside a goods door are an audit finding on their own.

Nesting material also brings its own passengers. Bird nests support mites and insects, and blocked ventilation openings and light fittings packed with nesting debris are a fire and maintenance issue. In warehouses the most common complaint we get is birds that have entered through a roller shutter left open and now roost on the roof steel above racking, fouling stock, packaging and the floor beneath.

Netting is the most complete solution and the right answer for large openings and whole elevations, warehouse roof voids, balconies, plant areas and atria. Properly tensioned on a fixed perimeter it excludes birds entirely. Badly installed netting sags, gaps open at the edges, and birds get in and then cannot get out, which is worse than no netting at all.

Spikes suit narrow ledges, sills, parapets, signage tops and pipework where birds perch rather than nest. They are unobtrusive and durable, but they are a perching deterrent, not a barrier: on a wide ledge, or where nesting material has already built up, birds will simply nest on top of the spikes unless the ledge is cleaned and the coverage is right.

Post-and-wire is a discreet option for heritage-sensitive or architecturally visible ledges where netting or spikes would be unacceptable visually. Mesh is used to close specific gaps such as vents, eaves and voids. Where a shutter or door is the entry route, the honest recommendation is often an operational change or a physical barrier at that opening rather than proofing the whole roof.

Whatever the specification, fixings have to suit the substrate and the exposure. Coastal UAE conditions are hard on fixings and on the ultraviolet stability of net, so we specify materials to last rather than to price a job cheaply and return in two years.

Proofing over an accumulation of guano and nesting debris traps the mess permanently and leaves the corrosion and the smell in place. The sequence is clean, disinfect, then proof.

Clean-up is done with controlled wetting to suppress dust, appropriate PPE and containment of the affected area, with waste bagged and removed rather than washed into surface drains. Where guano has been on a surface for a long time, we will tell you plainly if the finish underneath is already damaged, that is a repair, not a clean.

For occupied buildings we schedule clean-up outside working hours where we can, and we keep the area below the work isolated. On warehouse roof steel above racking, that usually means agreeing which aisles are cleared and when, in the same way as our high-level cleaning work.
